Classical Meets Contemporary:
Matthew Lynch x LSO x Dev Hynes
Documenting the process from Rehearsal to Performance at The Barbican.
When the London Symphony Orchestra collaborates with a modern icon like Dev Hynes, the result is a unique fusion of classical discipline and contemporary soul. My role, commissioned by conductor Matthew Lynch, was to document the full narrative of this collaboration, not just the final bow, but the work that got them there.
This wasn't standard event coverage. It was a documentary study of leadership and collaboration, focused on Lynch mastery as a conductor.
My focus was on capturing the dialogue between Matthew Lynch’s direction, the LSO’s precision, and Dev Hynes’ creative vision. From the first downbeat in the rehearsal room to the final applause in the Barbican Hall, I acted as a shadow, documenting the unspoken language of the orchestra.
Shooting with icons
Access to an LSO rehearsal is a privilege. The atmosphere is focused and intense.
A photographer in this environment must be completely invisible. Using silent shutters and keeping a respectful distance, I documented the candid interactions between Matthew and the musicians.
The Conductor's Focus: Capturing the intensity in Matthew’s eyes and hands as he shaped the sound.
The Collaboration: Candid moments of Dev Hynes and Matthew Lynch discussing the score—the intersection of two musical worlds.
The Quiet Moments: The sheet music, the instruments at rest, and the concentration of the players.
These images provide a rare glimpse into the "work" behind the performance.
Technical Approach: The "Silent" Professional
Working with orchestras requires a specific set of ethics.
Silent Operation: Zero shutter noise when possible with lights to respect the acoustics of the rehearsal and performance.
Low Light Capability: No flash was used. I relied on fast lenses to capture the natural ambience of the Barbican stage.
Discretion: Moving only during applause or loud passages to remain unnoticed by the audience and musicians.
Looking for Orchestral & Rehearsal Documentation?
I specialise in working with conductors and ensembles to document the artistic process, not just the final show. If you need a photographer who understands the etiquette of the orchestra pit and the rehearsal room, let’s collaborate.
